What It Is
The Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion, widely known as the Blue Mansion, is a restored 19th-century Chinese courtyard house on Lebuh Leith in George Town's UNESCO heritage zone. Built in the 1880s by the merchant Cheong Fatt Tze, the mansion blends Chinese architecture with Art Nouveau stained glass, English floor tiles and Scottish ironwork. Its signature indigo-blue walls use a lime wash made from natural plant dye, a technique rarely preserved in Southeast Asia.
The mansion won a UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage Award in 2000. It now operates as a boutique hotel with 18 rooms, a restaurant and a museum wing open to guided and self-guided tours. Film fans may recognise it from the 2008 movie Crazy Rich Asians, which used the courtyard for a mahjong scene.
What to See
The 45-minute guided tour covers the reception hall with its original blackwood furniture, the central courtyard surrounded by five granite-paved courtyards arranged according to feng shui principles, and the second-floor museum exhibition displaying photographs, artefacts and the story of Cheong Fatt Tze's life as a Hakka merchant who built a trading empire across Southeast Asia. The stained glass windows, cast-iron spiral staircases and hand-painted wall murals are the photographic highlights.
Best Time to Go and Queue Tips
The 11:00 am tour is generally less crowded than the 3:30 pm session. Weekday tours are quieter than weekends. Each guided tour accepts a maximum of 24 guests, so booking online in advance is recommended, particularly during school holidays and peak tourist season from November to February. The self-guided audio tour allows more flexibility since you can enter anytime between 11 am and 6 pm with a maximum of 10 guests per hour.
How to Get There
The mansion is at 14 Lebuh Leith, a quiet residential street in the northern part of George Town's heritage zone. It is a 10-minute walk from Lebuh Chulia or a 5-minute walk from ChinaHouse on Beach Street. Metered street parking is available along Lebuh Leith. By bus, any Rapid Penang route stopping on Jalan Penang or Lebuh Chulia puts you within walking distance. A Grab from the Weld Quay area costs RM6-8.
Nearby
- ChinaHouse — 5-minute walk east to Beach Street
- Pinang Peranakan Mansion — 12-minute walk south on Church Street
- Chew Jetty — 15-minute walk south to Weld Quay
Verdict: Who It's For
The Blue Mansion suits history and architecture enthusiasts, heritage travellers and anyone interested in Penang's merchant past. The guided tour is well-structured and informative enough to justify the RM25 fee. Photography lovers will appreciate the courtyards and indigo walls. Skip it if you are not interested in heritage architecture or if you prefer self-paced exploration and find guided tours too structured — though the self-guided audio option addresses that.

The indigo-blue walls are even more striking in person. Our guide on the 11 am tour was fantastic — she explained the feng shui layout of the five courtyards and pointed out the Art Nouveau stained glass that I would have completely missed on my own. The cast-iron spiral staircase is gorgeous.

Took the 3:30 pm guided tour and it was packed — 24 people max. Book online if you can. The mansion itself is stunning. The blackwood furniture in the reception hall, the hand-painted wall murals and the story of Cheong Fatt Tze as a Hakka merchant were all fascinating. Well worth the RM25.

Beautiful heritage building and I can see why they filmed Crazy Rich Asians here. The courtyard is very photogenic with the blue walls. My only complaint is that a lot of the guided tour involved standing in the entry hall listening to history rather than walking through rooms. The self-guided audio tour might be better for people who want to explore at their own pace.

As an architecture enthusiast, this was my favourite stop in George Town. The way the mansion blends Chinese courtyard design with Scottish ironwork and English floor tiles is remarkable. The indigo lime wash on the exterior walls uses a natural plant dye technique that is almost lost in Southeast Asia. Easy walk from Lebuh Chulia.

Went for the self-guided audio tour which gave more flexibility to linger in the courtyards and second-floor museum. The photographs and artefacts upstairs telling Cheong Fatt Tze's life story are interesting. RM25 is reasonable for this level of heritage preservation. Paired it with the Peranakan Mansion down the road for a full heritage morning.
