About Kapitan Keling Mosque
Kapitan Keling Mosque is Penang's oldest and largest Indian Muslim mosque, founded in 1801 by the South Indian community that served in the East India Company. The Mughal-style architecture features a large central dome, a minaret and an arcaded prayer hall surrounded by gardens.
Non-Muslim visitors are welcome outside prayer times. The visiting windows are 11 am to 1 pm, 2 to 4:30 pm and 5 to 6 pm daily. On Fridays, non-Muslim access starts from 2 pm only due to the congregational prayer. Dress modestly: long sleeves and trousers or a long skirt. Women will be offered a headscarf at the entrance. Robes are also available if needed. Entry is free. The mosque sits on the same road as Kuan Yin Teng and Sri Mahamariamman Temple, making it easy to visit all three in a single walk along Jalan Masjid Kapitan Keling. Visiting hours may shift during Ramadan.

The Mughal-style dome and minaret are beautiful from the outside, but the interior is even more impressive — huge arches, polished floors, and a magnificent chandelier hanging below the central dome. The staff at the entrance were very welcoming and offered us robes and headscarves. Entry is free and they accept donations.

Visited as a non-Muslim during the 2 to 4:30 pm window. The prayer hall is serene and the gardens surrounding the mosque are well kept. The stained glass windows and Arabic calligraphy panels are striking. One of the staff offered us a short free tour explaining the mosque's history dating back to 1801 when the South Indian community built it.

It is on the same road as Kuan Yin Teng and Sri Mahamariamman Temple so we walked all three in about 30 minutes — a great example of George Town's "Street of Harmony" where four religions coexist. The mosque itself is peaceful inside and surprisingly cool. Check the visiting hours carefully — Fridays only open from 2 pm for non-Muslims.

Penang's oldest and largest Indian Muslim mosque and the architecture is impressive. The arcaded prayer hall has a grand feel. Dress modestly — long sleeves and trousers or a long skirt are required. They have robes available if needed. Spent about 20 minutes inside. Free entry. The exterior is very photogenic too, especially the minaret.

One of the most beautiful mosques I have visited in Malaysia. The Mughal-style architecture with the large dome set against the blue sky is a great photo. Inside it is very peaceful. We went around 11 am and there were only a few other visitors. Located centrally in George Town so easy to include in any heritage walk. Note visiting hours may shift during Ramadan.
