About Fort Cornwallis
Fort Cornwallis marks the spot where Captain Francis Light first landed in 1786 and claimed Penang for the British East India Company. The star-shaped fort sits on the waterfront at the northeastern tip of George Town, surrounded by a moat that was restored and reopened in 2025. You can now walk the full perimeter of the fort for free; the entry fee applies only to the interior compound.
Inside, a row of Dutch-era cannons lines the ramparts, including the Seri Rambai cannon that locals believe has fertility-granting powers. The small museum and exhibition halls cover the fort's military history and Penang's founding era. Entry costs RM20 and is payable by card only; cash is not accepted at the gate. Guided tours run on Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 10 am, 12 pm, 2 pm and 4 pm. Plan 45 minutes to an hour. The Esplanade field in front of the fort is a popular spot for evening walks and food trucks after dark.

The restored moat around the star-shaped fort is a nice touch — you can walk the full perimeter for free. Inside, the row of Dutch-era cannons along the ramparts is the highlight, especially the Seri Rambai cannon which supposedly has fertility powers. The museum covers Penang's founding history well. About 45 minutes is enough.

Joined the guided tour on a Saturday at 10 am and it was excellent. The guide explained how Captain Francis Light first landed here in 1786 and the significance of the fort's location on the waterfront. The Esplanade field in front is great for an evening walk afterwards — there are food trucks after dark.

Historically interesting but honestly RM20 felt a bit steep for what is inside. The exhibition halls are small and the displays could use more detail. Note that they only accept card payment at the gate, no cash. The cannons and the views from the ramparts are the best parts. If you are into colonial history it is worth it, otherwise a walk around the outside moat for free might be sufficient.

Nice spot right on the waterfront at the tip of George Town. The fort itself is compact but the location is scenic and you can see across to the mainland. The old cannons lined up on the walls are impressive — over 200 years old and remarkably well preserved. Good to combine with a walk along the Esplanade. Closes at 7 pm on Tuesdays so plan accordingly.

Visited with my family on a weekday morning and we had the fort almost to ourselves. The kids loved running around the ramparts and looking at the cannons. The small museum section tells the story of the British East India Company in Penang. Walking the moat perimeter gives you a good sense of the star-shaped design. Well maintained overall.
