About Batik Painting Museum Penang
The Batik Painting Museum occupies a heritage shophouse on Armenian Street and exhibits nearly 100 original batik paintings by over 30 Malaysian artists. Batik painting uses wax-resist dyeing on fabric to produce layered, textured artworks — the technique is distinctly Southeast Asian and the results range from abstract to photorealistic landscapes.
The shop at the entrance sells original batik pieces, with smaller works starting from around RM50 and larger framed paintings running into the hundreds. Even if you are not buying art, the RM10 admission is worthwhile for the exhibition alone — you receive a complimentary postcard with entry. This is the best place in Penang to understand batik as an art form rather than just a fabric pattern, and to buy a piece with genuine artistic value as a souvenir.

Interesting museum with a good collection of batik art in various styles. The technique demonstrations are fascinating to watch. Students get half-price entry at RM5. The framed prints make beautiful wall hangings as souvenirs.

The batik workshop experience (RM30) lets you paint your own piece to take home — a truly personal souvenir. Our guide was patient and skilled. The museum is small but well-curated. Allow about 90 minutes for the full visit.

Bought a set of batik coasters (RM25 for 4) and a batik table runner (RM60). The colours are stunning and the craftsmanship is evident. A more meaningful souvenir than typical tourist tat. Open daily 10 am to 6 pm.

The combination of museum and gift shop works well. You learn about the art form then can buy pieces with an appreciation for the skill involved. Prices are reasonable for handmade art. Well worth a visit.
