About Straits Quay Marina

Straits Quay is a waterfront retail marina between Tanjung Tokong and Tanjung Bungah. At night, the marina's yachts and sailboats are reflected on the water alongside the lights of the surrounding restaurants and bars. The setting feels more Mediterranean than Southeast Asian — a deliberate design choice that gives it a different mood from the heritage zones.

Several waterfront restaurants and a small performing arts centre face the marina. It is a good dinner destination with built-in scenery, rather than a dedicated lookout point. About 15 minutes by car north of George Town. Free parking is available in the attached car park, and some restaurants validate parking tickets.

You can combine several of these spots into a single evening depending on where you are based.

Start at the Esplanade for sunset. Walk south along the waterfront to the clan jetties for a dusk visit before 9 pm. Continue along Pengkalan Weld and cut inland to Armenian Street for the lantern-lit atmosphere and evening stalls. End at a bar on Lebuh Chulia or Love Lane.

Head to KOMTAR Rainbow Skywalk around 6 pm for the sunset-to-dusk transition from level 65. After descending, take a Grab to Penang Hill Lower Station (about 15 minutes). Ride the funicular up for the full panoramic night view and take the last train down at 11 pm.

Drive or ride to Gurney Drive Promenade for sunset, then continue north to Straits Quay Marina for dinner at one of the waterfront restaurants. After dinner, proceed to the Batu Ferringhi night market, which runs until 11 pm.

Penang Hill offers the widest panoramic night view of the island. The funicular runs until 11 pm, and a return ticket costs RM30 for adults. After 7 pm on Monday to Thursday (excluding public holidays), tickets are discounted by 50 percent. The summit sits 833 metres above sea level, giving a clear line of sight across George Town, the Penang Bridge and the mainland.

Yes. The Rainbow Skywalk and observatory deck at The Top KOMTAR are open until 10 pm Sunday to Thursday and until 11 pm on Fridays and Saturdays. Last admission is one hour before closing. Tickets start from around RM38 for the 3-attraction pass covering the skywalk, observatory deck and sky bridge.

Yes. The air at the summit is noticeably cooler than at sea level, the queues for the funicular are shorter in the evening, and the city lights spread out clearly below. The 50 percent discount on Monday to Thursday evenings after 7 pm makes it an affordable outing. Bring a light jacket because temperatures can drop to around 20 degrees Celsius at night.

Gurney Drive Promenade faces west and offers direct sunset views over the Straits of Malacca, followed by a well-lit waterfront walk after dark. The Esplanade at Padang Kota Lama is another option, with colonial buildings lit up at night. Both are free, open around the clock and have hawker food nearby.

The clan jetties are residential areas, and Chew Jetty requests that visitors come between 9 am and 9 pm. Lee Jetty has LED-lit walkways that look striking after dark. Visit before 9 pm, walk quietly, and respect the residents. The Hean Boo Thean temple at the end of Yeoh Jetty is particularly photogenic at dusk when the lanterns are glowing.
