About Gurney Drive Promenade
Gurney Drive Promenade is a flat, well-lit 1.2-kilometre seaside walkway that faces west, making it one of the best free sunset spots on the island. After the sun sets, the walkway stays busy with joggers, families and couples enjoying the sea breeze and the lights of the coastal condominiums reflecting on the water.
Walk the promenade from west to east and finish at the Gurney Drive Hawker Centre for char koay teow or Hokkien mee under the lights. The newer Gurney Bay section, opened in 2024, adds a skate park, playground and kiosks to the waterfront. No admission fee, no closing time. Street parking is available along Persiaran Gurney, or take a Grab from George Town centre — roughly RM8 to RM12.

The promenade is perfect for an evening stroll. We walked along the bay around sunset and the sea breeze was refreshing after a hot day. The hawker stalls near the Gurney Drive food court had excellent Penang assam laksa.

Came here after dinner for a walk. The waterfront is well lit and feels safe at night. Locals were jogging and families were out. Bring cash if you want to eat at the hawker stalls — most do not take cards.
