About Ghee Hiang (Sesame Oil & Pastries)
Ghee Hiang has been producing sesame oil in Penang since 1856, making it one of the oldest food brands on the island. Their cold-pressed sesame oil is the signature product — fragrant, dark-amber and used in Hokkien and Nyonya cooking across the region. A 300ml bottle starts around RM15. They also produce their own oval-shaped tau sar piah, which has a slightly different texture from Him Heang's version — less flaky, denser, with a stronger bean flavour.
The Jalan Macalister flagship is the largest outlet and has the widest selection. Additional branches operate on Burma Road (daily 9 am – 6 pm), Beach Street (Mon–Sat 9 am – 6 pm) and at Sunshine Central Mall in Air Itam. If you are buying sesame oil, the glass bottle packs better than plastic for checked luggage. Ghee Hiang products make reliable gifts because the brand is well-known throughout Malaysia.

Ghee Hiang has been making sesame oil and pastries since 1856. Their pure sesame oil (RM18 per bottle) is darker and more fragrant than supermarket brands. We also bought heong peng and the original tau sar piah.

The Jalan Macalister outlet is the main one. They sell sesame oil in various sizes from RM8 to RM45. The pastries — especially the mung bean biscuits — are freshly baked daily. Good place for traditional Penang gifts.

Bought the heritage gift set (RM50) with sesame oil, tau sar piah and heong peng. Everything was beautifully packaged. The sesame oil is the real star — it elevates any Asian dish. A Penang institution for good reason.

Their tau sar piah is among the best in Penang — the pastry is flaky and the mung bean filling has just the right amount of sweetness. RM12 per box of 8 pieces. Buy extra because they disappear fast once you start sharing.

The shop is well-organised with clear pricing. You can taste before you buy which helps with choosing. We ended up spending RM80 on sesame oil, biscuits and candied nutmeg. Open daily and the staff are patient with tourists.
