About Kek Seng Coffee Shop
Kek Seng is a traditional kopitiam on Jalan Penang that has been running for over a century, and the reason people queue here is a single item: durian ice cream. The stall inside the kopitiam makes the ice cream by hand using real D24 durian flesh, then scoops it onto a bowl of ais kacang loaded with red beans, grass jelly and sweet corn. The flavour is intense and unmistakably durian.
The ais kacang with durian ice cream runs around RM6 to RM8 depending on toppings. Without durian, a plain bowl is roughly RM4. The kopitiam also houses stalls selling assam laksa and other hawker staples, so you can combine lunch and dessert in one stop. The shop closes at 5 pm and popular items sell out earlier on weekends. Arrive by early afternoon if durian ice cream is the goal.

The ice kacang with homemade durian ice cream is legendary for good reason. The shaved ice came piled with colourful agar-agar jelly, red beans, creamy corn and two generous scoops of durian ice cream. The durian flavour was strong and authentic. A Penang Road institution since 1906.

Old-school kopitiam feel. We ordered the ice kacang special and it was refreshing in the midday heat. The rose syrup, evaporated milk and red bean combination is classic. The cendol is also good but the ice kacang with durian ice cream is the star. Prices are reasonable.

This coffee shop has been around for over a century and the durian ice cream they make in-house is still the draw. The agar-agar jelly topping adds a nice texture. They also serve decent assam laksa if you want something savoury before your dessert.

★★★☆☆June 2026
The ice kacang arrived half melted by the time it reached our table, which was disappointing. The durian ice cream itself was tasty but the presentation could be better. It is a basic old coffee shop, so do not expect much in terms of comfort or service.

If you love durian, this is the place. The homemade durian ice cream is creamy and intense. The ice kacang is well-loaded with toppings. The old coffee shop atmosphere is part of the charm. On Penang Road so it is easy to find. Cash only.
