About Sek Yuen Restaurant
Sek Yuen has been serving traditional Cantonese cooking on Jalan Pudu since 1948, and it holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand in the 2026 guide. The restaurant now spans three adjoining shophouses and retains its original ceiling fans, family photographs and no air-conditioning policy. The pipa duck (whole roasted duck pressed flat and lacquered until deeply caramelised) is the signature — it must be pre-ordered at least a day in advance. The eight-treasure duck, stuffed with glutinous rice, chestnuts and lotus seeds, is another dish that requires advance notice.
For walk-in diners, the regular menu covers reliable Cantonese favourites: stir-fried prawns, steamed fish, kung po chicken and claypot tofu. Prices are fair for the quality — most dishes cost RM18 to RM40. The Pudu location is slightly off the typical tourist path, but a Grab ride from Bukit Bintang takes under 10 minutes. This is the KL restaurant that food historians and heritage enthusiasts put at the top of their lists.

The pipa duck at Sek Yuen is unlike anything else in KL — a whole duck pressed flat and roasted until the skin is lacquered and deeply caramelised. You must pre-order at least a day ahead but it is absolutely worth the planning. The eight-treasure duck with glutinous rice stuffing was also remarkable. Cantonese cooking since 1948.

We pre-ordered the pipa duck and added the stir-fried prawns and steamed fish from the regular menu. Every dish showed the kind of technique that comes from 75-plus years of practice. The dining room has no air conditioning and retains its original ceiling fans — that is part of the charm. Michelin Bib Gourmand-recognised.

The claypot tofu and kung po chicken from the walk-in menu were both well-executed Cantonese dishes. Prices are fair at RM18 to RM40. The restaurant spans three shophouses on Jalan Pudu and feels like a time capsule. Closed Mondays. A Grab ride from Bukit Bintang takes under 10 minutes.

The eight-treasure duck stuffed with glutinous rice, chestnuts and lotus seeds was the highlight of our KL food trip. The flavours were complex and the duck was perfectly roasted. Call a day ahead to reserve this dish. Sek Yuen is slightly off the tourist path in Pudu but well worth the detour for heritage Cantonese cooking.

Solid traditional Cantonese food in a heritage setting. The steamed fish was fresh and simply prepared, and the stir-fried prawns were perfectly wok-fried. The no-air-conditioning policy keeps the old-school feel intact but can be warm during the afternoon. Ask about the pipa duck — it needs advance ordering but it is the signature.
