About River of Life at Masjid Jamek
The River of Life project transformed the neglected confluence of the Klang and Gombak rivers — the historic birthplace of Kuala Lumpur — into an illuminated riverside promenade. After dark, blue underwater lighting turns the water a vivid electric blue, and the surrounding walkways, bridges and the heritage Masjid Jamek mosque are bathed in warm light. The contrast between the neon-blue water and the century-old mosque creates one of KL's most photogenic night scenes.
The area is free to visit and accessible via the Masjid Jamek LRT station. The blue lighting runs from 7 pm to midnight. A walking loop along the river takes about 20 minutes and connects to Merdeka Square and Dataran Merdeka, both of which are also illuminated at night. Combine a River of Life walk with dinner in nearby Chinatown for a complete heritage-district evening.

The blue underwater lighting at the confluence of the Klang and Gombak rivers is surreal — the water glows electric blue while the heritage Masjid Jamek mosque is bathed in warm light behind it. This is the birthplace of Kuala Lumpur and it has never looked better. Free and open from 7 pm to midnight.

Great free night attraction. The walking loop along the river takes about 20 minutes and connects to Merdeka Square and Dataran Merdeka, both of which are also illuminated. The contrast between the neon-blue water and the century-old mosque creates a scene unlike anything else in KL.

Combine this with dinner in Chinatown for a perfect heritage-district evening. We walked from Masjid Jamek LRT station and the blue-lit riverside promenade was beautiful. The entire area has been transformed from what was once a neglected riverbank into one of KL most photogenic night scenes.

★★★☆☆June 2026
The blue lighting is striking in photos but in person the area is a bit smaller than expected. The walking loop is short and there is not much to do beyond taking photos and walking along the promenade. Still worth a quick stop if you are already visiting Masjid Jamek or Merdeka Square.

★★★★☆April 2026
We went around 8 pm and the blue water effect was at its most vivid. The surrounding bridges and walkways are nicely lit too. Good free option for an evening stroll. Masjid Jamek LRT station is right there so it is very easy to reach. Best visited after dark when the lighting is on.
