About Dodol
Dodol is a traditional Malay toffee-like confection made from coconut milk, palm sugar (gula melaka) and glutinous rice flour. The mixture is slow-cooked for hours until it reaches a thick, chewy consistency. Classic dodol has a deep caramel sweetness from the palm sugar, while modern varieties add durian, pandan, chocolate or jackfruit flavours. The texture is sticky and dense — closer to a soft toffee than a candy.
Individually wrapped packets cost RM5 to RM15 and are available at Central Market, supermarket aisles and dedicated souvenir shops. Dodol from Melaka is considered the benchmark, but KL shops carry all regional varieties. The shelf life is three to six months when sealed. Dodol is halal and vegetarian. It packs flat and light, making it practical for suitcases. This is the product to buy if you want something uniquely Malay that most visitors outside Southeast Asia have never encountered.

The original coconut and palm sugar dodol at RM8 per pack from Central Market is soft, chewy and perfectly sweet. Bought the durian dodol at RM12 and the pandan version at RM10 as well. Each pack weighs about 200g and is individually wrapped for easy sharing.

Dodol from the Kompleks Kraf souvenir section at RM7 per pack was excellent value. The traditional recipe uses coconut milk and gula melaka, giving it a deep caramel flavour. The jackfruit variety at RM10 was my favourite. Shelf life is about three months sealed.

Bought a gift box with five dodol flavours for RM35 at Central Market. Included original, durian, pandan, mango and yam varieties. The presentation was beautiful with woven palm leaf packaging. Friends back home loved the chewy toffee-like texture. Great alternative to chocolate gifts.

Quality varies between brands. The RM5 supermarket versions are rather hard and overly sweet. Spend a little more, around RM10-12, for artisan brands at Central Market or Kompleks Kraf. The texture should be soft and slightly sticky. Durian flavour is quite pungent so only buy for adventurous recipients.

The coconut dodol at RM8 was delicious, like a rich toffee with tropical flavour. Bought from a stall in Central Market that has been making dodol for decades. They also had a newer chocolate dodol at RM10 which was an interesting fusion. Travels well in hand luggage.
