About Petaling Street Food Stalls
Petaling Street is the lantern-lit spine of KL's Chinatown, a 500-metre pedestrianised lane lined with hawker stalls, fruit carts and heritage kopitiams. While the market itself sells clothing and accessories, the real draw is the food on the surrounding side streets. Jalan Hang Lekir and Madras Lane carry the heaviest concentration of food stalls: char kuey teow, chee cheong fun, herbal soups, Indian rojak and papaya desserts.
Kim Soya Bean, a family-run stall operating for over 70 years, sells silky tau foo fah (soy bean curd) for RM2.20. Other highlights include roasted chestnuts near the north arch, cold-pressed sugarcane juice and a cluster of popiah (spring roll) vendors along the eastern fringe. The best window for food is 5 pm to 9 pm, when stalls are fully set up and the red lanterns overhead provide the atmosphere. Pasar Seni LRT station is a two-minute walk from the south entrance.

The tau foo fah at Kim Soya Bean is worth a visit on its own — silky smooth soy bean curd with gula melaka syrup for just RM2.20. We also grabbed a popiah from the stall on the corner and roasted chestnuts near the north arch. Excellent casual eating along the lantern-lit street.

Walked the full length of Petaling Street before settling on a char kuey teow stall on Jalan Hang Lekir. The flat noodles had proper wok hei and the prawns were fresh. The sugarcane juice cart nearby is a good way to cool down. Best time for food is after 5 pm when more stalls open.

The herbal soup stall tucked behind the main market serves a pork rib soup with medicinal herbs that is deeply flavoured and comforting. At RM10 a bowl with rice it is one of the best deals in Chinatown. Pair it with a chee cheong fun from Madras Lane around the corner.

My favourite part of Petaling Street is the fruit stalls — fresh cut papaya, mango and dragon fruit at RM5 a box. I also had the Indian rojak on the eastern side of the market, which had crispy fritters and a thick dark sauce. Great spot for a walking food tour.

Decent variety but the market area itself is more about shopping than food. The real food stalls are on the side streets — Jalan Hang Lekir and Madras Lane. The chee cheong fun and cendol from those alleys are worth seeking out. Pasar Seni LRT station is a two-minute walk from the south entrance.
