About Merdeka Square (Dataran Merdeka)

Merdeka Square is where the Malaysian flag was first raised at midnight on 31 August 1957, marking independence from British colonial rule. The 95-metre flagpole at one end of the field remains one of the tallest freestanding flagpoles in the world. Facing the square is the Sultan Abdul Samad Building, a Moorish-style government building with a distinctive clock tower and copper onion domes.

The square is open 24 hours with no admission fee. Daytime visits let you appreciate the colonial architecture surrounding the field, including the Royal Selangor Club, St Mary's Cathedral and the KL City Gallery (RM10 entry). At night, the Sultan Abdul Samad Building is illuminated and a light show plays on the grounds from around 9 pm. The Masjid Jamek LRT station is a five-minute walk away. Combine this stop with a visit to Masjid Jamek mosque across the river and Central Market to the south.
