What It Is
Kwai Chai Hong (meaning "Ghost Child Lane" in Cantonese) is a restored alleyway tucked behind the shophouses of Petaling Street in KL's Chinatown. Once a forgotten back lane, it was transformed in 2019 into an open-air art gallery featuring life-sized murals and sculptures that depict the daily lives of Chinese settlers who lived here during the 1960s.
The murals show scenes of hawkers, barbers, children playing, and families gathering — each accompanied by QR codes that link to audio stories and historical context about the neighbourhood. The alley is maintained by a private initiative and is free to visit year-round.
The Murals
There are currently eight major mural installations along the roughly 80-metre lane. Highlights include a tin-mining scene, a traditional kopitiam (coffee shop) setting, and a barber at work. The art rotates periodically — the most recent update refreshed several panels with new contemporary pieces while keeping the heritage theme. Sculptures and three-dimensional elements are set into the walls, creating photo opportunities throughout.
Best Time to Visit
Weekday mornings from 9 am to 11 am are the quietest for photos without crowds. Evening visits (after 7 pm) offer a different atmosphere, as the alley is lit with warm lighting that highlights the murals. Weekend afternoons are the busiest, with queues forming at popular mural spots for photos.
Cafes and Bars Nearby
The alley connects to several small cafes and bars that have opened in the adjacent shophouses. These serve coffee, craft cocktails and light bites, making Kwai Chai Hong a good stop before or after dinner in Chinatown.
How to Get There
From Pasar Seni MRT or LRT station, walk south on Jalan Hang Kasturi past Central Market, then turn left onto Jalan Petaling. Kwai Chai Hong is accessed from Lorong Panggung, a narrow lane between shophouses — look for the signage. The alley is easy to miss if you walk past quickly, so keep an eye on Google Maps navigation.
Nearby
- Central Market — 5-minute walk north on Jalan Hang Kasturi
- Merchant's Lane — 3-minute walk on Petaling Street

★★★★★September 2026
The murals depicting 1960s Chinese settler life are so detailed and lifelike. The barber scene and the kopitiam setting are my favourites. Scanning the QR codes for audio stories added a whole layer of history I would have missed otherwise. The warm evening lighting after 7 pm makes the alley feel magical.

Almost walked right past it — the entrance from Lorong Panggung is easy to miss. The 80-metre lane has about 8 major mural installations plus 3D sculptures set into the walls. Free entry and open until midnight. Good for 20–30 minutes of exploring and photos.

★★★★★July 2026
Came on a Wednesday morning at 10 am and had the whole alley to myself for photos. On weekends the popular mural spots have queues. The tin-mining scene is really well done. Connected to some nice cafes and bars in the adjacent shophouses too.

★★★☆☆June 2026
It is a narrow lane with some nice street art — about 15 minutes to see everything if you are not queuing for photos. For a free attraction in Chinatown it is decent, but I would not make a special trip. Best combined with Central Market and Petaling Street nearby.

★★★★☆April 2026
What I appreciated most was the historical context — the Ghost Child Lane name in Cantonese hints at the neighbourhood past. The murals tell stories of hawkers, children playing and families gathering that bring old KL to life. A 5-minute walk from Pasar Seni MRT station.
