About VCR
VCR occupies a restored 1927 building in Pudu's historic district, painted entirely in matte black on the outside. Inside, the space opens up into an airy, high-ceilinged dining room with exposed brick, terrazzo floors and a long espresso bar. The cafe has been a fixture of KL's specialty coffee scene since its opening and continues to draw crowds for both its coffee and its brunch menu.
The espresso blend is consistent and well-extracted, with a flat white running RM14 and a pour-over from RM18. Brunch plates include a smoked salmon Benedict (RM28), buttermilk pancakes (RM24) and a nasi lemak with sambal prawns (RM26). The space fills up between 10 am and 1 pm on weekends, so arriving by 9:30 am secures a table without a wait. Walk-in only. Card and e-wallet accepted. The nearest rail station is Hang Tuah monorail/LRT, about a 10-minute walk, or take a short Grab from Bukit Bintang.

The smoked salmon Benedict at RM28 was perfectly executed — runny yolk, silky hollandaise, quality smoked salmon on fresh sourdough. The flat white at RM14 was clean and balanced. The restored 1927 building with matte black exterior and airy interior is stunning.

Arrived at 9:15 am on Saturday and got the last empty table — by 10 am there was a queue. The nasi lemak with sambal prawns at RM26 is the Malaysian option that works here. The pour-over at RM18 was bright and fruity. Walk-in only, no reservations.

VCR is a KL classic for good reason. The exposed brick, terrazzo floors and long espresso bar make it feel special without being pretentious. The buttermilk pancakes at RM24 were fluffy and generous. Ten-minute walk from Hang Tuah monorail or a quick Grab from Bukit Bintang.

The espresso blend is consistently well-extracted. Worked on my laptop for two hours on a Tuesday morning — plenty of outlets, good WiFi and staff do not rush you. The high-ceilinged space keeps it feeling open even when busy. Card and e-wallet accepted.

Good coffee and food but weekends between 10 am and 1 pm are genuinely hectic. Come on a weekday or very early Saturday for the best experience. The Pudu heritage district setting adds character. Total for two people with brunch and coffees was about RM85.
