About Central Market (Pasar Seni)
Central Market occupies a 1930s Art Deco building that originally served as the city's wet market. The two-storey hall now houses over 300 stalls selling batik textiles, pewterware, traditional woodcarvings, handmade jewellery and Malaysian snacks. Stalls are organised by cultural zone: a Malay section, a Chinese section and an Indian section, each with handicrafts and decor reflecting that heritage.
Entry to the building is free. Individual stall prices vary, but batik sarongs start around RM30 and pewter items from RM20. The Annexe Gallery on the upper floor hosts rotating art exhibitions and cultural workshops, including batik painting classes (around RM45 for a 90-minute session). Some individual stalls close by 8 pm even though the building stays open until 10 pm. The Pasar Seni LRT station is directly connected to the market via a covered walkway. Petaling Street in Chinatown is a three-minute walk east.

Love the 1930s Art Deco building. Over 300 stalls inside and I could have spent the whole afternoon. The batik painting class was RM45 for 90 minutes and we made our own sarong designs. The Pasar Seni LRT station has a covered walkway straight to the entrance.

Good range of handicrafts at reasonable prices. Batik sarongs from RM30, pewter items from RM20. The cultural zones for Malay, Chinese and Indian crafts make it easy to browse by interest. Some stalls do close by 8 pm even though the building stays open until 10.

Three-minute walk from Petaling Street and you get a completely different shopping experience. Less hectic, more curated. The Annexe Gallery upstairs rotates art exhibitions and there was a photography show when we visited. Good for a rainy afternoon.

Decent for souvenir shopping but some of the items felt mass-produced. The better finds are in the upper floor stalls. Food options inside are limited but the hawkers along Kasturi Walk outside serve solid local dishes.

We came specifically for the batik and were not disappointed. Bought fabric by the metre and a couple of hand-painted pieces. The whole building has a heritage feel that malls completely lack. Free entry too, which is always nice.
